What is the Word Mania Malaysia Challenge?

The Word Mania Malaysia Challenge is a national spelling competition for all Malaysian primary and secondary school students aged 7 to 17 years with a 1BestariNet Yes ID. Word Mania consists of a practice round and three competition rounds leading to a Grand Finals physical event. Both individual and school prizes can be won.

When is the Word Mania Challenge?

The Word Mania Challenge runs from 2 January 2014 until 23rd February 2014 followed by a Grand Finals event where announcement of winners and prize-giving will take place. There is a registration and practice period, three competition rounds followed by the Grand Finals event.

How are winners chosen?

The sum of an individual's top 10 games for each round will determine their position on the Student Leaderboard for each round. The cumulative total of these top 10 games per round (i.e. total of Top 10 for Round 1 + total of Top 10 for Round 2 + total of Top 10 for Round 3) will determine the individual's overall position at the end of the online competition. The top five (5) students from each sub category (Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Lower Secondary, Upper Secondary) at the end of the online competition will be selected to compete in a physical Grand Finals event (date and venue for this event will be announced at a later date). Three (3) Word Mania Challenge Malaysia 2014 winners from each sub category will be select at the Grand Finals event.

The sum of a school's top 50 games for each round will determine the school's position on the School Leaderboard, and the winning school for each round. The cumulative total of these top 50 games per round (i.e. total of Top 50 for Round 1 + total of Top 50 for Round 2 + total of Top 50 for Round 3) will determine the school's overall position at the end of the competition.

How do the rounds work?

There are three rounds - each one representing a leg of the journey to the moon and back. Each round lasts one week, and commencing on 12.01am on the Monday and ending at midnight on the Sunday of that fortnight.

The sum of an individual's top 10 games each round will determine the student's position on the Student Leaderboard for each round.

The sum of a school's top 50 games each round will determine the school's position on the School Leaderboard, and ultimately the winner for each round.

What is the community goal?

The community goal is a collective achievement celebrating the fun of literacy. The theme this year is 'To the Moon and Back'. Every game you play contributes to taking the LP rocket on one (or several) return trips to the moon.

If students earn more points for longer words, how can younger students compete?

The LiteracyPlanet team weighs results according to a student's age. This means that students of different levels of ability are able to compete fairly.

Are smaller schools at a disadvantage?

No. Every school has a chance of winning! In each competition round, the total of a school's best 50 scores will determine their position on the leaderboard. The overall school winner will be determined by calculating the school's best 50 scores for each of the three rounds.
